Bullying Interventions in Schools

Bullying Interventions in Schools: Six basic approaches

Author(s): Ken Rigby

Publisher: ACER Press 2010

Dealing effectively with the problem of bullying in schools is now recognised as a major challenge for educators of young people. Successful interventions to stop, or even reduce, bullying in schools are difficult to achieve; however, the case for improving the effectiveness of school interventions in cases of bullying is overwhelming.
More attention needs to be paid to what can be done in addressing actual cases of bullying, as well as seeking to create a school environment in which the task may be more manageable. Schools need to be aware of the range of approaches that may be adopted and applied in dealing with individual cases. Bullying Interventions in Schools examines in detail the six major intervention methods:

Bullying Interventions in Schools aims to promote an understanding of what methods exist to address actual cases of bullying and when and how they can best be applied. Each method is described in detail, together with its rationale. In addition, the strengths and limitations of their use are critically examined, drawing upon research-based evidence regarding their efficacy and applicability for different kinds and degrees of bullying encountered in schools.

Review of Bullying Interventions: Six major approaches from
Sheri Bauman,PhD , Associate Professor at the University of Arizona writes:

Finally here is a book that speaks intelligently to the very basic questions of what educators should do when bullying occurs. We know that despite current efforts to reduce school bullying, incidents continue to occur and must be addressed. Ken Rigby, a noted international expert on bullying, brings his vast knowledge and experience to describing six approaches to interventions. It is enormously refreshing to find a book that does not claim to have the magic wand, but that gives the reader sufficient information to make appropriate choices in a given situation. After thoroughly discussing each of the six approaches to intervention (which is five more than most educators typically consider), Dr. Rigby offers recommendations for how to select the best method (or combination thereof) for the case at hand. Educators will be able to answer the question “What do I DO?” with greater understanding, confidence and awareness of options.

Dr. Ken Rigby’s newest book should be on the shelf of every educator. Here is a book that does not claim to have “the answer;”  readers learn about six approaches to intervention and then  determine which approach is most suitable to a given incident that occurs within a particular context.  Intelligently written, in accessible prose that is characteristic of Dr. Rigby’s books, this book reflects his vast knowledge and experience.  In the current explosion of books on bullying, there is not another book that provides such a broad and careful review of options for educators.  Experienced teachers know that their effectiveness in the classroom increases when they a large repertoire of teaching strategies to draw from. In the area of bullying, the repertoire has been meager, and this book greatly expands the set of tools from which a teacher or other educator can draw.  I cannot praise this book highly enough.
